چکیده

The pterygopalatine ganglion derives from preotic myelencephalic crest cells and may receive contributions from the ganglia of the trigeminal and facial nerves [1]. There is no available information on the pterygopalatine ganglion morphology and structure in human fetuses. In adults the pterygopalatine ganglion is morphologically attached to the maxillary nerve, in the pterygopalatine fossa. Lying infero-medially to the maxillary nerve, it fills the sphenopalatine foramen in variable degree and is crossed anteriorly by the maxillary artery. Preganglionic parasympathetic fibers from the lacrimal nucleus in pons are brought to the pterygopalatine ganglion via the greater petrosal nerve and the Vidian nerve (nervus canalis pterygoidei). Postganglionic fibers distribute to glands and blood vessels. The glandular territory is represented by the lacrimal gland [2] and mucosal glands of the palate [1], nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses [3] and pharynx [4]. The vascular territory is represented by the cerebral arteries [5-7] and arteries of the face [8], thus the ganglion is involved in migraines and facial pain.

[Immunohistochemical observation of neurotransmitters in rat and human pterygopalatine ganglia].

Immunohistochemical studies were performed to determine the distribution of neuropeptides and tyrosine hydroxylase in rat and human pterygopalatine ganglia. In the rat pterygopalatine ganglion, the most commonly found peptide in ganglion cells was vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP) (99%) followed by neuropeptide Y (NPY) (54%) and enkephalin (ENK) (11%). Substance P (SP)-, calcitonin gene-r...

Morphology, topography and cytoarchitectonics of the pterygopalatine ganglion in Egyptian spiny mouse (Acomys cahirinus, Desmarest).

Using the thiocholine method of Koelle and Friedenwald and histological techniques the pterygopalatine ganglion in Egyptian spiny mouse (Acomys cahirinus, Desmarest) was studied. The ganglion was found to be a single irregular cluster of neurocytes, situated on the medial surface of the maxillary nerve. The ganglion is composed of oval, elliptical and sometimes fusiform ganglionic neurones in c...

بررسی اندوسکوپیک آناتومی حفره پتریگوپالاتین در اجساد بالغ ایرانی

Background : Our aim in this study was to recognize the endoscopic anatomy of the Pterygopalatine fossa (PPF) and the anatomic variations of the related neurovascular structures, to define the endoscopic endonasal approach to this region.   Methods: In a case series study 17 fresh adult cadavers were studied by endoscopic endonasal approach. To reach the pterygopalatine fossa endonasally, we ...

Sphenopalatine Ganglion Block for Migraine?

Recently, sphenopalatine ganglion (SPG) block has been generating interest as another extracranial nerve block that may be used as part of treatment for migraine. The SPG is a group of neurons within the pterygopalatine fossa that lies behind the nasopharynx posterior to the middle turbinate and inferior to the sphenoid sinus.1 The SPG contains sensory and sympathetic fibers but is largely a pa...

Morphological distinction between vasodilator and secretomotor neurons in the pterygopalatine ganglion of the cat

We investigated whether vasodilator and secretomotor ganglion neurons are morphologically distinguishable from each other in the parasympathetic ganglion of the cat. When Cholera toxin B subunit, a retrograde tracer, was injected into the palatine gland, both large and small ganglion neurons were retrogradely labeled in the pterygopalatine ganglion. On the other hand, when the tracer was inject...
